Lisa Kahane
South Bronx Portrait Studio, 2012
Lisa Kahane has been photographing the Bronx since 1979, and was the photographer for Fashion Moda. Specializing in documentary work and portraiture, Kahane now brings her traveling portrait studio to the Freedman Home. The traveling photo studio, a balancing act between posed and candid portraiture, brings the glamour of the studio wherever it goes, making a record of time, place and community. It happens quickly, a performance of identity rather than a reflection on it.
The traveling portrait project began in the 80s. As Kahane comments, “My studio can stay in place for a few weeks or a lifetime. It can be invitational or circumstantial, reflecting the reality of the subject or the point of view of the photographer, a conversation made visible.” The portraits will be posted online at lisakahane.wordpress.com
