environmental installation
Gian Maria Tosatti, came from Italy last year for a residency with LMCC on Governors Island. During his time there, he became deeply aware of the sense of solitude in a city as dynamic as New York. New York, he felt, was, “a bay of one-man islands, made by apartments or rooms inhabited by people coming here from anywhere, looking for their luck, a role, an identity, floating for years or being shipwrecked for decades. All those people bring with them, in the standard shells of their apartments, few objects and tons of memories. When they leave, the apartment remains empty again, ready for a new tenant.”
This installation is a reflection on time and lights. After all these years in which AFH remained closed everything has disappeared from this room except the light that has poured in over the years bleaching details and memories. In this installation, Tosatti made a vetrification of the room working only with metal and glass, (the two elements that can maintain their color even when exposed to the sunlight) in order to transform the room into a cave of memory, loss and contemplation.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOU WILL BE WALKING OVER GLASS WHEN ENTERING THIS ROOM. PLEASE STEP AS GENTLY AS POSSIBLE TO PRESERVE THE INSTALLATION. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER WITH HEELS.
