How Much Do I Owe You (2012)
Caroline Woolard’s participation in the exhibition was the result of a barter between the curator and the artist. Her condition was that in exchange for her work, the curator had to reveal a secret from her life about money. The secret, which would remain confidential, was sent by email and the photograph was subsequently produced for the exhibition.
“I knew it was possible when you spoke truth to power” are the words inscribed on the wooden coin surrounded by votive candles, suggesting an initiation or a ritual. The image, placed in the ceiling as a replacement for a standard ceiling panel is part of an exchange among the artist and office workers who wish to create a subtle, yet radical act of self empowerment, a “standing up to power” within the business enterprise. Office workers who wish to replace a standard ceiling panel with a photograph must submit a personal secret about money to coinandtongue.com
