Weaving In & Out
The painting as installed here can be viewed as an exploration of the space between seduction and the impossibility of attaining the object of desire. Of the four elements that compose the work: the wall, the ink drawing on the cinder block, the painting and the ladder, the only “real” one, according to the artist, is the wall itself. The ladder is made of melted candy, calling to mind both the sweetness of physical pleasure as well as the flashy, hazardous side of indulgence. The rungs lead to nothing but the desire to transcend the surface of the image. It is an illusion consisting of many layers, real and imagined, and the swing appears to traverse them all.
