How and Nosm

This Side of Paradise

With floor-to-ceiling greyscale honeycomb textures, reminiscent of a soundproofed hip-hop recording studio, artist duo How & Nosm present a visual remix of the Andrew Freedman Home’s history and former residents. Repeating diamond and pyramid shapes, symbolic of wealth and impressive architectural structures respectively, are here constructed with hollow cardboard; referencing the illusionary nature of the building’s original purpose and the facade of opulence once enjoyed by the building’s occupants. These shapes also represent the former residents, grouped into a homogeneous community above reflections of themselves in a mirrored floor. The artist duo’s signature split-face emerges from the room’s center, one part life and one part death, illustrating well justified concerns of mortality in an old age home.
