Born and raised in Harlem, Brooklyn-based artist Larry Weekes intends for his work to evoke a moment of reflective and healing meditation for the viewer. His mandalas — an art form of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions representing the universe — embody the energy force of a single individual, the “I.” When combined, these individual cells become part of the greater “we” that is the universe. Weekes uses his mandalas to propose that the individual and the communal are healthier when they exist in tandem.
