Sky Blue, 2019
Wook yarn and pony beads
84 x 106 inches
Commissioned by the 2019 NLE Curatorial Lab
In color theory, blue is known as one of the most therapeutic colors, possessing spiritual properties and direct calming effects on the autonomic nervous system. Sky Blue references the healing properties of the color, acknowledging the sky as a space of boundless possibility. In consideration of the site, Sky Blue explores the wonder one experiences when seeing the sky for the first time after a long period of hospitalization. Assembled through the process of braiding and beading, the installation is an homage to personal and collaborative methods of hair care, grounded in childhood nostalgia and the cultural experiences of the African diaspora.
