NLE Lab: Remix Rememory
Vandana Jain’s site-responsive installation, Infinite Array, continues the artist’s series of Glass Diamonds works, while referencing the “extreme array of choice displayed through the various jewelers’ booths” at the Jamaica Colosseum Mall’s Jewelry Exchange.
In her Glass Diamonds installations, Jain references the iconic symbols of pawn shops, jewelry store signs, and awnings by creating meditative floor drawings with cleaned auto glass. The act of drawing on the ground references the Indian tradition of rangoli, an art form in which patterns are created on the floor using materials such as colored sand, red brick powder and flower petals. Each new iteration of Glass Diamonds is specific to the context of the site, and amplifies the sheer accessible beauty of this low-cost, overlooked material. These diamonds are proud fakes that emulate the real thing.
