On view is the DOMINCIAN YORK PROYECTO GRAFICA (DYPG) portfolio, Here + There. In Dominican culture, the concept of duality plays an important role in defining identity, both collectively and individually. Duality functions as a double mirror between the new and the known, between the imaginary and the tangible.
This duality has many sources. It springs from the geopolitics of the island shared by both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It arises from Dominicans’ migration around the world. Wherever they go, Dominicans are marked by duality, seeming to integrate easily into the new society even as they resist new cultural patterns. The result is a multi-social identity. In the United States, for example, Dominicans have neither abandoned their country and culture of origin, nor embraced wholly the culture of their adopted land.
As such, Dominicans are often multinational, displaying characteristics that are constantly in flux, always in the process of adaptation through cultural evolution.
Here + There explores these issues as part of a multi-part print project.
• Part one consists of 24 small-format prints, two prints by each artist of DYPG,
published in a limited edition of 25 each.
• Part two consists of 12 large-format prints, one print by each artist of DYPG,
published in a limited edition.
• Part three consists of unique prints that take the form of
sculptures, installations, publications, performances and interactive artworks.
