Nocturnal Translation Drawing (2011)
Mixed media and projection
Nocturnal Translation is site-specific installation created on the five columns throughout the gallery space. The drawing functions as a continuation of the piece “Nocturnal Drawing System and Atomic Nightlife,” a video featuring animated shapes that result from a musical score. The drawing continues an extended translation process by taking the shape vocabulary of the animation, and utilizing it in an installation context, creating shifts and changes in the language of the work while keeping an inherent structure. The projection of the animation, which occupies a wall in the gallery, acts at a back drop for the drawings on the columns, creating a multi-layered sense of space. Using the architecture as the vehicle to dissect and activate the space, the viewer can get a sense of the moving animation and the still columns and enter the actual space of the drawing by walking through the columns.
